Call to Worship (based on Romans 9:1-5)

Leader: We gather as a people who have received what we never earned—

People: adoption and glory, covenant and promise.

Leader: To us have been entrusted the words of life and the worship of the living God.

People: Blessed be the Lord, who has not left us as orphans.

Leader: From among the nations God has called a people for his own,

People: and to him belongs the Messiah, who is over all.

Leader: The patriarchs walked by faith before us, and the promises were sealed in their keeping;

Let us pray:

Father in heaven, you are the God who hears. You do not turn away from an honest cry or close your ear to a sincere plea. So we come to you this morning with no pretense, asking that you would attend to our prayer from lips that are not feigned.

You search us, Lord. You try the heart and visit us in the night, and you know what you will find—not perfection, but a people who long to walk in your paths without stumbling. Where our steps have wandered, hold them now. Where our feet have wavered, steady them on the road you have set before us.

We call upon you because we are confident you will answer. Incline your ear to us; hear our words. Show us again the wonders of your steadfast love, O Savior of all who run to you for refuge. Be to us a shelter when the world presses hard, a stronghold when our own strength fails.

And set our hope, Father, on the day that is coming—when we will behold your face in righteousness, and awake at last satisfied, fully content in beholding your likeness. Call to Worship (based on Romans 8:26-39)

Leader: We do not know how to pray as we ought. There are mornings when the words will not come — when what we carry is too heavy and too tangled to put into sentences.

People: But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. We are not alone in our weakness. God knows what we cannot say.

Leader: The One who searches the heart knows what is the mind of the Spirit — because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

People: We come this morning not on the strength of our own prayers, but carried by an Intercessor who never grows weary and never misses the mark.

Leader: We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

People: Not some things. All things. We bring the things that have not made sense — the losses, the detours, the prayers that seemed to go unanswered — and we lay them before the God who wastes nothing.

Leader: Those whom he foreknew he also predestined. Those whom he predestined he also called. Those whom he called he also justified. Those whom he justified he also glorified.

People: We did not find our way to this place on our own. We were known, called, and brought here by a God whose purposes cannot be undone.

Leader: If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son but gave him up for all of us — will he not with him also give us everything else?

People: The cross is the proof. If He gave us His Son, He will not withhold what we need. We rest this morning on the generosity of a God who held nothing back.

Leader: Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

People: None of it. We have walked through hard things and we are still here — not because we held on tightly enough, but because He never let go.

Leader: In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

People: Not survivors. More than conquerors. We do not come to worship a God who barely got us through — we come to worship the God who overcomes.

All: We worship You, Father — the God who intercedes for us, works all things together, and holds us in a love that nothing in heaven or on earth or in all creation can ever separate us from. We are Yours. And You are ours. To You alone be glory, now and forever. Amen.

Opening Prayer (based on Psalm 105:1-11,45b)

Let us pray:

Father, we come this morning to do what Your people have always done.

We come to give thanks. To call on Your name. To make known among the people around us what You have done. Not because You need to be reminded of Your own works — but because we do. We are a forgetful people, and the discipline of praise is the discipline of remembering, and we need it more than we often know.

So we remember this morning.

We remember that You are the God of Abraham — who called one man out of everything familiar and made from him a nation, a story, a line of promise that runs all the way to us. We remember that You are the God of Isaac and of Jacob — that the covenant You made was not a single transaction but a living commitment, renewed across generations, carried forward through people who were flawed and failing and fully known to You. You did not make Your promises to perfect people. You made them to people like us. And You kept them anyway.

We remember that Your covenant is eternal. Not contingent on our faithfulness — rooted in Yours. A thousand generations cannot exhaust it. Time cannot erode it. Our failures cannot revoke it. The word You spoke to Abraham still stands this morning, as solid and sure as the day You first spoke it.

Forgive us, Father, for living as though it does not. We confess that we have walked through hard seasons acting as though the covenant had lapsed — as though Your promises had an expiration date we somehow missed, as though the silence of a difficult week meant that You had gone quiet for good. We have sought other sources of security and found them unreliable. We have looked for what only You can give in places that were never designed to give it.

This morning we come back. Back to the God who remembers His covenant forever. Back to the God whose judgments reach to all the earth. Back to the God who looks at a wandering, forgetful, sometimes faithless people and says — you are still Mine. The promise still stands. I have not forgotten you.

Turn our seeking toward You today. Let the songs be real. Let the praise not be performance. Let every heart in this room find in the telling of Your works the fresh reminder that You are still working — in us, among us, and ahead of us — with the same faithfulness You have shown every generation before us.

Praise the Lord. And let it be more than words this morning.

Call to Worship (based on Romans 8:12-25)

Leader: We are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. We have been set free from that obligation — and brought into something far greater.

People: We come this morning not as slaves to the old way of living, but as those who have been called into the freedom of the children of God.

Leader: All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. You did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.

People: We received a spirit of adoption. And by that Spirit we cry out — Abba, Father. You are ours, and we are Yours.

Leader: The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God — and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.

People: We do not come to You as strangers hoping to be tolerated. We come as Your children, welcomed into an inheritance we could never have earned.

Leader: We share in His sufferings so that we may also share in His glory. The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us.

People: We bring our hard weeks and our tired hearts — and we lay them down here. What we are carrying is real, but it is not the whole story. The best is still ahead.

Leader: The whole creation has been groaning in labor pains — and not only creation, but we ourselves groan inwardly while we wait for the redemption of our bodies.

People: We groan too, Lord. We feel the weight of a world not yet made right. But we groan as people who have the first fruits of the Spirit — as people who know what is coming.

Leader: In hope we were saved. And hope that is seen is not hope. But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

People: We are a waiting people — but we are not a hopeless people. We wait on the certainty of what You have promised, and what You have promised will not fail.

All: We worship You, Father — the God who adopted us, who calls us heirs, who fills us with a hope that does not disappoint. The creation groans, and we groan with it — but we groan toward You. Come, Lord Jesus. Until then, we wait — and we worship. Amen.

Opening Prayer (based on Psalm 139:1-12,23-24)

Let us pray:

Father, You already know everything we are about to say.

You knew it before we walked through the door this morning — every conversation we wish had gone differently, every fear we carried quietly so no one else would see it. You know when we sit down and when we rise up. You discern our thoughts from far away. There is not a word on our tongues this morning that You do not already know completely.

And we are here anyway. That is its own kind of grace.

We confess that the knowledge of You knowing us so thoroughly is not always a comfort. We have become skilled at managing what others see — presenting the version of ourselves that holds together, that looks like it is doing fine. But You cannot be managed. You see through every careful presentation to the thing underneath it. You know us as we actually are, not as we have arranged ourselves to appear.

Some of us have tried to run from that. We have descended into our own private darkness and told ourselves You could not see us there. But You are there. The night is as bright as the day to You. There is no depth to which we can sink where Your hand is not already extended. We cannot outrun Your presence — and this morning, standing honestly before You, we are grateful that we cannot.

Because we do not come to You needing to hide. You have already seen everything there is to see — and You are still here. You have hemmed us in behind and before and laid Your hand upon us. That is not the posture of a God who is finished with us. That is the posture of a God who will not let us go.

So we ask what the Psalmist asked — not as a formality, but as the most honest prayer we know how to pray. Search us, O God, and know our hearts. Try us and know our thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in us — and lead us in the way everlasting.

Meet us now in this hour. And remind us that to be fully known and fully loved at the same time — by You — is not a contradiction. It is the gospel.

In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Leader: There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

People: We come in from a week that accused us — voices of failure, voices of shame, voices that reminded us of every place we fell short. We come to worship the God who has silenced every one of them.

Leader: The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set us free from the law of sin and death.

People: We were not strong enough to free ourselves. We tried and we know it. Thanks be to God — the freedom we could not earn has been given to us as a gift.

Leader: God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son.

People: What we owed, He paid. What we could not carry, He bore. We worship today not because we have kept our end of any bargain, but because He has kept every promise He ever made.

Leader: To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

People: Turn our minds, O Lord. We confess how quickly they drift toward worry, toward self, toward the things of this world that cannot satisfy. Set our minds on You. Be our life and our peace in this hour.

Leader: You are not in the flesh — you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you.

People: We do not come to You as strangers hoping to be noticed. We come as those in whom Your Spirit lives. Draw us deeper into that reality today — that we might live from it rather than merely believe it.

Leader: If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

People: The same power that rolled back the stone and walked out of the tomb is alive in us. We have no reason to live as though death has the final word.

All: We worship You, Father — the God of no condemnation, the God of the giving Spirit, the God of resurrection life. What the law could not do, You did. What death could not hold, You raised. And what we could not become, You are making us. To You alone be glory, now and forever. Amen.

Opening Prayer (based on Psalm 119:105-112)

Let us pray:

Father, we confess that we have tried to find our way in the dark.

We have trusted our own instincts and stumbled. We have followed our own reasoning and ended up in places we never intended to go. We have listened to voices that promised to show us the way, and found ourselves more lost than when we started. And so we come to You this morning with the weariness of people who have been navigating without a light.

Thank You that You have not left us without one.

Your word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Not a floodlight that illuminates everything at once — but a lamp. Enough light for the next step. Enough clarity for the ground directly beneath us. You have never promised to show us the end of the road from where we are standing. You have promised to show us where to put our feet. Teach us to trust that. Teach us to stop demanding the whole map when You have given us all the light we actually need.

We confess, Father, that we have not always treasured what You have given us. Your word sits on our shelves and on our phones and within arm’s reach at almost every moment of our lives — and still we go days without opening it, without sitting under it, without letting it speak into the places where we are most confused and most afraid. Forgive us for treating as ordinary what is anything but ordinary. Forgive us for reaching for every other source of direction before we reach for Yours.

We come this morning as people who have made vows and struggled to keep them — who have promised to obey Your righteous ordinances and found the resolve harder to hold than we expected. We do not come boasting in our faithfulness. We come leaning on Yours. You are the one who keeps every promise You have ever made, and we are grateful that our standing before You rests on that — and not on ours.

Your testimonies are the joy of our hearts — or they ought to be. Stir that joy in us again this morning. Where familiarity has bred indifference, awaken us. Where discouragement has made the word feel distant, draw us back. Where the noise of this world has drowned out the steady, faithful voice of Scripture, quiet everything else and let Your word be heard.

We incline our hearts to You this morning — not to the end of the road, not to the full resolution of every hard thing we are carrying — but to You, and to the next step You are illuminating. That is enough. You are enough.

Speak to us now through the preaching of Your word. And lead us, one faithful step at a time, all the way home.

Leader: I do not understand my own actions — for the good I want to do, I do not do, and the very thing I hate is what I do.

People: We come honestly before You, Lord, knowing the war that rages within us. Our willing is one thing; our doing is another.

Leader: I delight in the law of God in my inmost self,

People: yet we feel another law at work in us, warring against the law of our minds, holding us captive.

Leader: It is no longer I alone who fail, but sin that still dwells within me.

People: We make no excuses and offer no defense. We bring our divided hearts and lay them open before You.

Leader: Wretched person that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

People: We cry the same cry, O God. We look not to our own strength, for it has failed us, but to the mercy that reaches the helpless.

Let us pray:

Father, we come to You this morning as people who are tired.

Not all of us could name the weight we carried through the door today — but You know it. You have always known it. And so we come, not because we have ourselves together, but because Your Son has spoken words over us that we could not speak over ourselves: Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

We come, Father. That is all we have to offer this morning — we come.

Forgive us for the ways we have looked for rest in every other place first. We have turned to distraction and found it empty. We have turned to busyness and found it exhausting. We have turned to the approval of others and found it unreliable. We confess that we are a generation not so different from the one Your Son described — hard to reach, slow to respond, finding fault with every voice You sent. We have heard the music and refused to dance. We have heard the mourning and refused to weep. Lord, have mercy on us for the hardness that settles so quietly into hearts that were once tender.

But You, Father — You are not hard. You are the One who hides these things from the wise and the learned and reveals them to infants. Not because ignorance is a virtue, but because empty hands receive what full hands cannot hold. So empty us of whatever we have been clutching that has kept us from receiving what You alone can give.

Thank You for Your Son — who is gentle and humble in heart, who does not crush the people who are already broken, who does not snuff out what is barely flickering. Thank You that His yoke is easy and His burden is light — not because the way is without cost, but because He carries the weight of it with us and for us.

Meet us now in this hour. Speak to the weary ones. Reach the ones who came in here doubting that anything said from this pulpit could touch what they are carrying. Give rest — the deep kind, the kind that goes beneath the surface and settles something in the soul that circumstance cannot disturb.

We ask it through Jesus Christ our Lord, the One in whom You are well pleased, and in whom we find our rest.

Amen.

Leader: Do not let sin reign in your mortal bodies. Do not offer yourselves to sin as instruments of unrighteousness — for sin is not your master.

People: We are not under law but under grace. We come this morning as those who have been brought from death to life.

Leader: Once we were slaves to sin — bound to it, shaped by it, carried wherever it led. But thanks be to God, we have been set free.

People: We have been set free — not to do as we please, but to become what we were made to be: servants of righteousness, children of the living God.

Leader: The wages of sin is death. That is the end of the road the old life offered — not freedom, not fulfillment, but death.

People: But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. We did not earn it. We could not purchase it. It was given — freely, fully, finally.

Leader: We present ourselves to God this morning — not as those who are perfect, but as those who belong to Him. Our members as instruments of righteousness. Our hearts yielded to the One who bought us.

People: We are no longer our own. We have been freed from sin and bound — gratefully, willingly — to God.

All: We worship You, Father — the God who liberates, the God who transforms, the God whose gift is life where there was only death. May this hour be an offering of our whole selves to You. To Your name be all glory. Amen.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father,

We come before You this morning humbled by the weight of a simple truth: that to receive Your Son is to receive You, and to receive You is to receive the One who sent Him. We did not earn that welcome. We did not negotiate for it. You extended it to us in grace, and we are still learning what it means to live inside it.

Lord, these words remind us that You are paying attention to small things. A cup of cold water. A quiet act of welcome. A moment of kindness offered to someone in Your name, unwitnessed by anyone but You. We confess that we have sometimes reserved our faith for the grand gestures — the visible moments, the measurable results — while overlooking the ten thousand ordinary opportunities You place before us every week to receive one another, to serve one another, and to honor You in the doing of it.

Teach us, Father, to see the people in front of us the way You see them — as those You have sent, those You have placed in our path, those whose presence in our lives is never accidental. Make us a people who welcome the stranger, who notice the overlooked, who offer what we have without calculating whether it is enough to matter.

And as we open Your Word this morning, remind us that faithfulness in small things is not a lesser calling — it is the very texture of the life You invite us into. May Your Son be honored in every act of welcome we extend, every cup offered, every door opened in His name.

Leader: Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We have died to sin — how can we live in it any longer?

People: We have been baptized into Christ Jesus. We were baptized into His death. We were buried with Him — and we have been raised to walk in newness of life.

Leader: Just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too have been united with Him — not only in His death, but in His resurrection.

People: Our old self was crucified with Him. The body of sin has been done away with. We are no longer slaves to what once held us.

Leader: For whoever has died has been set free from sin. And if we died with Christ, we believe we will also live with Him.

People: Christ was raised from the dead and will never die again. Death no longer has dominion over Him — and because we are united to Him, it no longer has the final word over us.

Leader: So consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

People: This is who we are. Not who we are trying to become — who we already are, in Him. Dead to sin. Alive to God.

All: We gather this morning as a resurrection people — marked by the waters of baptism, united to the risen Christ, and called to walk in the newness of life He has given us. To Him be all glory, now and forever. Amen.

Let us pray:

Lord God, our Father,

We come to You this morning as David came — not with polished credentials or an impressive spiritual resume, but with honest need and an outstretched hand. Incline Your ear, O Lord, and answer us. We are poor and needy — not merely in material things, but in the deeper poverty only You can see: the insufficiency of our own strength, the thinness of our own reserves. We have learned, sometimes painfully, that the end of ourselves is precisely where You meet us.

You are good, and You are forgiving. Your steadfast love toward all who call on You is not a theological abstraction — it is the lived experience of every soul in this room who has called on Your name in desperation and found You faithful. We call on You again this morning — not with the polite, measured portion we reserve for public occasions, but with the whole of what we are: the fears we haven’t spoken aloud, the burdens carried through the week, the questions that don’t have easy answers.

Teach us Your way, O Lord, that we may walk in Your truth. We confess how easily we drift, how naturally we incline toward our own understanding. We do not need more information about You so much as we need formation by You. Unite our hearts to fear Your name — one direction, one devotion, one great desire: to glorify You.

Be near today to those among us who are bent low under hard circumstances, those looking for a sign of Your goodness in the midst of what feels like unrelenting difficulty. Turn to them with Your favor. Give them strength, and let the evidence of Your grace be visible enough that those around them take note.

You are Lord — abounding in steadfast love, faithful to every generation. We do not deserve Your attention, and yet You give it freely. We do not deserve Your grace, and yet here we are — standing in it, worshiping in it.

May Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, be honored above all else in this place today. In His name we pray.

Leader: We have been justified by faith — declared righteous not by our own doing, but by the grace of God poured out through Jesus Christ.

People: Therefore we have peace with God. Not a peace we earned, but a peace He gave — through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Leader: Through Him we have been granted access into this grace in which we now stand. We do not come before God as strangers or as those on trial — we come as those who belong to Him.

People: We stand in His grace. We rejoice in the hope of His glory. This is where we take our place today.

Leader: And we do not only rejoice in hope — we rejoice even in our sufferings, knowing that God wastes nothing. Suffering produces endurance; endurance produces character; character produces hope.

Leader: While we were still weak, Christ died for the ungodly. While we were still sinners — not after we had cleaned ourselves up, not after we had proven ourselves worthy —

People: God demonstrated His love for us. Christ died for us. That is the measure of His love — not our worthiness, but His grace.

Leader: Come, let us worship the God who justifies the ungodly, who reaches the unreachable, and who loves the unlovable.

All: We come — not because we are worthy, but because He is faithful. We come — not to earn His favor, but to celebrate the favor He has already given. Glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose love we stand. Amen.

Opening Prayer (based on Genesis 18:1-15)

Let us pray:

Lord God Almighty,

You are the God who draws near. You are not a distant deity, removed from the dust and dailiness of human life — You are the One who comes to us, who seeks us out, who appears at the entrance of our tents in the heat of the day. We marvel this morning that the God who holds the universe in His hands would stoop to sit with us, to meet us where we are, to speak into our ordinary hours. You did it for Abraham. You do it still. And so we gather, asking You to do it again — right here, right now, in this place.

Father, we confess that we are much like Sarah. We have heard Your promises and we have laughed — not always the laughter of joy, but sometimes the laughter of doubt. We have looked at our own limitations, our own depleted resources, the barrenness of what we bring to You, and we have quietly concluded that what You promised simply cannot happen. Forgive us for reasoning from our weakness rather than from Your faithfulness. Forgive us for measuring Your power by what we can see, when You are the God who works precisely in the places where human possibility has run out.

And yet, gracious Father, we come before You not crushed by our unbelief, but drawn back by Your patience. You did not abandon Sarah in her laughter. You did not walk away when she denied it out of fear. You simply asked the question that silences every doubt and disarms every excuse: Is anything too hard for the Lord? Let that question settle over us this morning. Let it do its work in every weary heart, every discouraged spirit, every life that has been waiting so long it has nearly stopped expecting.

We come before You today as a people who need to hear You speak. We are carrying things into this room that are too heavy for us — burdens we have borne quietly, hopes we have nearly abandoned, situations that have stretched our faith to its limits. Meet us, Lord. Sit with us as You sat with Abraham. Feed us from Your Word as he fed his guests. And let us leave this hour having encountered not merely an idea about You, but You Yourself — the living God, the Promise-Keeper, the One for whom nothing is too hard.

May the truth of Your Word today open what has been closed, restore what has grown cold, and call forth faith where there has been only silence. May Your Son, Jesus — the fulfillment of every promise that began in that tent at Mamre — be glorified among us. And may Your Spirit grant us ears to hear what You are saying, and hearts courageous enough to believe it.

We ask all of this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Hope.

Call to Worship (based on Romans 4:13-25)

Leader: The promise was given not through the law, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.

People: We come today not trusting in our own merit, but in the grace of the God who justifies the ungodly.

Leader: Abraham believed God — and against all hope, he hoped. He did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God.

People: We, too, believe. Strengthen our faith, O Lord, that we might not waver in the face of what seems impossible.

Leader: God is faithful — fully convinced that what He has promised, He is able to perform.

People: We rest our lives on that faithfulness. His Word will not return empty; His promises will not fail.

Leader: The words “it was credited to him as righteousness” were written not for Abraham alone.

People: They were written for us — for all who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

Leader: Jesus was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

Opening Prayer (based on Genesis 12:1-9)

Let us pray:

Sovereign Lord and Father,

You are the God who calls — who speaks into ordinary lives and summons Your people toward extraordinary purposes. We come before You this morning as those who, like Abram, have heard Your voice and gathered in response to it.

We confess, Father, that obedience does not always come easily. We cling to what is familiar — to the land we know, the comforts we have built, the plans we have made for ourselves. We are slow to go when You say go, and slow to trust when the destination is unclear. Forgive us for the times we have hesitated at the threshold of Your calling, for the faith we have offered You in half-measures.

Yet even now, You are a God of promise. You spoke to Abram not with a map, but with a word — and that word was enough. Remind us today that You do not ask us to see the whole journey before we take the first step. You ask only that we trust the One who holds the journey in His hands.

As we open Your Word this morning, attune our hearts to hear You speaking still. Let the same faith that moved Abram to build an altar in a foreign land move us to surrender every unfamiliar thing to Your purposes. You are working a story far larger than our own, and we are humbled and grateful to be written into it.

May Your Son, Jesus — the fulfillment of every promise made to Abraham — be exalted in this place today. May Your Spirit grant us ears to hear, hearts to receive, and the courage to follow wherever You lead.

To You alone be all glory and honor.

Leader: The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them.

People: We have come today because He called us here — not by accident, but by grace.

Leader: Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

Let us pray:

Loving Father,

In the beginning — before light, before land, before the first creature drew its first breath — You were. Not waiting. Not preparing. Simply being, in the fullness of Your triune life, complete in Yourself, lacking nothing, needing no audience and no occasion to be God. We come before You this morning undone by that truth. You did not create because You were lonely. You created because You are good, and goodness, by its very nature, overflows.

We confess that we take the world for granted. We move through days thick with Your handiwork — light and darkness, sea and sky, seed-bearing trees and creatures of every kind — and we forget that every single thing we have ever seen or touched or tasted is the overflow of Your creative Word. You spoke, and it was. You called it good, and it was good. Forgive us for living in Your cathedral as though it were merely a convenience.

On this Trinity Sunday, we bow before the mystery that was present in that first act of creation — the Father speaking, the Spirit hovering, the Word going forth — one God, yet not solitary, moving together in perfect unity to make something out of nothing and call it very good. We cannot fully comprehend that mystery, Father. But we can worship in the presence of it.

Remind us today that we are not accidents. We were made in Your image — carefully, intentionally, on purpose — and then You rested, not from exhaustion, but in satisfaction. That rest still speaks. It tells us that what You make, You declare finished. What You declare finished, You declare good. And what You declare good, You do not abandon.

Speak to us now through Your Word, as You have always spoken — and let something new be made in us.

People: We are together in one place this morning — gathered, expectant, and waiting on You.

People: Come, Holy Spirit. Fill this house. Fill us. Do again what only You can do.

Leader: All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

People: We speak today by Your power, worship today by Your grace, and gather today by Your call.

Leader: This is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: “In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh.”

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father,

We come before You on this day of Pentecost reminded that no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit — and so even the faith that brought us through these doors this morning is itself Your gift. We did not find our way to You. You found Your way to us, and Your Spirit made us willing to come.

We marvel this morning that You did not give one gift to one person and call it finished. You gave varieties of gifts, varieties of service, varieties of activity — and yet one Spirit, one Lord, one God who activates all of them in all of us. Forgive us for the times we have treated the Spirit’s work as something to be debated rather than received, analyzed rather than obeyed, contained rather than followed. Forgive us for the times we have envied the gifts of others rather than faithfully developing our own, or neglected what You placed in us because it seemed too small to matter.

Remind us today that there are no insignificant members of this body. Every gift is given for the common good — not for the elevation of the one who carries it, but for the building up of those around them. Make us a people generous enough to use what we have been given in service of one another.

And Father, on this day when we remember the rushing wind and the tongues of fire and the birth of Your church — fill us again. Not with spectacle, but with power. Not with noise, but with life. We are one body because we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body — and that is a unity the world did not give us and cannot take away.

May what happened in Jerusalem long ago be more than history to us today. May it be present tense.

Ever-Present Father,

We confess that we come to You this morning much like those first disciples — with questions about timing, with our own maps of how we think Your Kingdom ought to unfold, with a quiet preference for the answers that fit the future we have already imagined. Forgive us for the times we have been more focused on what You will do than on what You have called us to do in the meantime.

Redirect us, as Jesus redirected them. Lift our eyes from our calendars and our agendas to the horizon of Your purposes. Remind us that the times and seasons belong to You alone — held in Your authority, moving according to Your wisdom — and that our calling is not to decode them but to be faithful within them.

Thank You for the promise that still stands over every gathering of Your people: power from on high, the presence of Your Spirit, and a mission that stretches to the ends of the earth. We are not waiting for something to begin. It has already begun. We are those who carry it forward.

And Father, we gather this morning in the same posture those disciples assumed after the ascension — together, in one place, devoted to prayer. May that be true of us today in more than form. May we be genuinely united, genuinely expectant, and genuinely dependent on You for everything that is about to happen.

He is coming back. That is not a doctrine we merely affirm — it is a hope we live toward. Shape our worship this morning by that hope.

Heavenly Father,

We come before You this morning as people who live in a world full of altars — shrines to comfort, to success, to self, to a thousand unnamed things we have quietly worshiped in place of You. Forgive us for the times we have reached for what we could see rather than trusting the One who cannot be contained in anything we have made.

You are not unknown. You made the world and everything in it. You are Lord of heaven and earth. You do not live in what our hands have built, nor are You served as though You needed anything from us — for You are the One who gives to all people life and breath and all things. We do not come here today to inform You or to supply You. We come because You are the source of everything we are.

And yet — You are not far from any one of us. That truth silences our excuses and overwhelms our fear at the same time. There is nowhere we have wandered that You have not already been. There is no one in this room You cannot reach.

Remind us that You have not left Yourself without a witness, that history moves according to Your purposes, and that You have fixed a day when all things will be made right through the One You raised from the dead.

Gracious Father,

Like Stephen, who gazed past the hostility of this world and fixed his eyes on heaven, we ask that You grant us that same clarity of vision — the ability to see what is eternal when what is temporary presses in.

We confess, Father, that we do not always stand with Stephen’s courage. Forgive us for the times we have softened our witness, silenced our testimony, or turned away from what faithfulness cost. Strengthen us by Your Spirit to speak the truth with grace, to live without apology for the gospel, and to trust that our lives — like his — are held in Your hands.

And where we have been wronged — where resentment has taken root — pour out in us the mercy that marked Stephen’s final breath. Give us the grace to pray for those who have hurt us, to release what You alone have the right to judge, and to leave justice in Your keeping.

Leader: Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit.”

People: But You, Lord Jesus, are no thief. You came openly, honestly, and sacrificially — the rightful Shepherd of our souls.

Leader: “The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice.”

People: We have heard Your voice, Lord! Among all the competing voices of this world, Yours is the one that calls us by name.

Leader: “He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.”

People: You know us, Lord — not as a crowd, but by name. You do not drive us from behind; You lead us from the front. Where You go, we will follow.

Leader: “They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

People: Tune our ears, Good Shepherd. In a world full of strange voices promising what they cannot deliver, teach us to recognize the sound of the One who truly loves us.

Leader: Jesus said, “Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.”

People: You are the gate, Lord — the only way into safety, the only path to life, the only entrance to the Father’s fold.

Leader: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.”

People: Protect us, Lord, from every voice that would lead us astray, every false promise that would rob us of life, and every lie that seeks to destroy what You have built in us.

Leader: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

People: Not just survival, but abundance! Not just existence, but life overflowing!

All: Come, let us worship the Good Shepherd — who knows us by name, leads us into green pastures, guards us as our gate, and gives us life beyond anything we could ask or imagine. He has called, and we have come! Amen.

Let us pray:

Father in heaven, we come before You this morning as Your gathered people — drawn together not by habit or obligation, but by the same Spirit that drew those first believers together in Jerusalem. On the day Your church was born, they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. And so we come today, seeking that same devotion, that same hunger, that same holy togetherness that marked the earliest days of the faith.

We confess, Father, that devotion does not come naturally to us. We live in a world of distraction and drift. We are tempted to treat the gathering of Your people as one option among many rather than the lifeblood of our faith. Forgive us for the times we have settled for casual Christianity when You have called us to committed community. Forgive us for showing up in body while our hearts remain elsewhere.

Teach us again, Lord, what it means to sit under the teaching of Your Word with ears that are truly open. Teach us what it means to share life with one another — not surface-level pleasantries, but the kind of fellowship where needs are known and met, where burdens are shared, and where no one among us is overlooked or forgotten. Teach us the sacred mystery of the broken bread and the poured-out cup. And teach us to pray — not as a ritual we perform but as the very breath of our life together.

Father, we read that awe came upon everyone in those early days, that wonders and signs were being done, that the believers shared everything in common, and that they ate together with glad and generous hearts, praising You and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day, You added to their number those who were being saved. What a picture of Your church as it was meant to be! We long for that, Father. Not as nostalgia for a bygone era, but as a present reality in this congregation.

We ask You to Do it again, Lord. Pour out Your Spirit among us. Make us generous and glad. Unite our hearts. Break our selfishness. Draw the lost to Yourself through the witness of a people who genuinely love one another. And may everything we do in this place today — every word spoken, every song sung, every prayer offered — bring glory to Your name and reflect the beauty of the church Your Son purchased with His own blood.

In the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

Leader: On that same day, two disciples were walking to a village called Emmaus, talking with each other about all the things that had happened.

People: Lord, we come to You today carrying our own conversations — our questions, our confusion, our searching for answers.

Leader: While they were talking, Jesus Himself came near and walked with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.

People: Open our eyes, Lord! You are walking with us even now. Do not let us miss Your presence among us.

Leader: He said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” And they stood still, looking sad.

People: We confess, Lord, that we have carried our sorrows as though You were not near. We have walked in sadness when You were right beside us.

Leader: Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them the things about Himself in all the Scriptures.

People: Speak to us through Your Word today, O Christ! Unfold the Scriptures before us, that we might see You on every page.

Leader: As He sat at table with them, He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him.

People: In the breaking of the bread, we see You, Lord! In the fellowship of this house, reveal Yourself to us again.

Leader: They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking to us on the road, while He was opening the Scriptures to us?”

People: Set our hearts on fire, Lord! Burn within us as You speak. May we never be the same for having been in Your presence today.

All: Come, let us worship the Risen Christ — who draws near to us on the road, opens the Scriptures to our understanding, and reveals Himself in the breaking of bread. Our Lord is alive, and He walks among us still! Amen.

Opening Prayer (based on Acts 2:14a, 36-41)

Let us pray:

Gracious and Sovereign God, we come before You this morning as a people who have heard the good news and believed. Like those gathered in Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost, we have been confronted with a truth that demands a response — that this Jesus, whom the world rejected, You have made both Lord and Messiah.

We thank You, Father, that Your Word still has the power to cut us to the heart. In a world that has grown dull to truth and deaf to conviction, we pray that You would pierce us again with the sharp edge of Your gospel. Do not let us sit comfortably in our religion. Disturb us with Your grace. Awaken us with Your mercy. Remind us that the message Peter preached in the streets of Jerusalem is the same message that calls to us today: Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

We rejoice, Lord, that Your promise is for us and for our children and for all who are far away — everyone whom You, the Lord our God, call to Yourself. What a breathtaking promise! No one is beyond the reach of Your grace. No one is too far gone for Your mercy. No one stands outside the circle of Your invitation.

Father, just as three thousand souls were added to the church that day, we pray that You would still draw men and women to Yourself through the preaching of Your Word. Save us from this corrupt generation — not by our own strength, but by the power of Your Spirit and the authority of the risen Christ.

Now speak to us, Lord. Open our hearts to receive what You have for us today. May we leave this place as those first believers did — changed, committed, and on fire with the message of the gospel.

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Messiah, we pray. Amen.

Let us pray:

Almighty God, Creator and Sustainer of all life, we gather in Your presence this day with hearts full of wonder and gratitude. Like those who stood in the streets of Jerusalem on the Day of Pentecost, we have come to hear a word from You — a word of power, a word of truth, a word that changes everything.

We thank You, Father, for Jesus of Nazareth — a man attested to us by mighty works, wonders, and signs that You performed through Him. We confess that these were no accident of history, but the unfolding of Your definite plan and foreknowledge. You have always been at work, even when the world could not see it. Help us to trust that You are still at work today — in our lives, in our church, and in this broken world.

And now, O God, our hearts rise with the great proclamation of the apostle Peter: You raised Jesus up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it. Death could not contain Him! The grave could not hold Him! We worship a risen Savior, and because He lives, we too shall live.

Like David, who spoke in faith of what was to come, we set the Lord always before us. With Him at our right hand, we shall not be shaken. Fill our hearts today with the gladness and joy that come from knowing that You have made known to us the paths of life.

Open our ears to hear Your Word. Open our eyes to behold Your glory. Open our hearts to receive Your grace. And may everything spoken and sung in this place today bring honor to the name of Jesus Christ — whom You raised from the dead and exalted as both Lord and Messiah.

Call to Worship (based on John 20:1-18)

Leader: Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb — and found the stone had been removed.

People: The darkness could not hold back the dawn. Death could not hold back the Lord of Life!

Leader: She ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”

People: In our grief, we too have searched for Jesus in the wrong places. We have looked for the living among the dead.

Leader: Peter and the beloved disciple ran to the tomb. They saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, rolled up in a place by itself.

People: This was no act of theft. This was the careful, deliberate work of a risen Savior. Even in resurrection, our Lord brings order out of chaos.

Leader: The disciples saw and believed, then returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.

People: Lord, we confess that even when the evidence surrounds us, we sometimes return to our old ways. Give us eyes to see and hearts to stay.

Leader: Two angels in white asked her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”

People: When sorrow clouds our vision, we cannot see what stands right before us. Open our eyes this Easter morning, Lord.

Leader: She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. He said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?”

People: He is always closer than we realize, always seeking us even as we seek Him.

Leader: Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him.” Then Jesus said to her — “Mary!”

People: He calls us each by name! The Good Shepherd knows His sheep, and His sheep know His voice!

Leader: She turned and said to Him, “Rabbouni!” — which means Teacher.

People: When He speaks our name, everything changes. Our mourning turns to joy, our confusion turns to clarity, our despair turns to hope!

Leader: Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

People: The risen Christ sends us out with the greatest news the world has ever heard!

Leader: Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord.”

People: And we have seen Him too — in the promise of His Word, in the power of His Spirit, and in the hope of this resurrection morning!

Leader: Christ is risen!

People: He is risen indeed!

Leader: Come, let us worship our living, reigning, risen Lord!

All: Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen!

Let us pray:

Almighty and ever-living God, we give thanks to You this glorious Easter morning, for You are good, and Your steadfast love endures forever. Let all Your people say it again with joy — Your mercy endures forever!

Lord, You are our strength and our song, and on this day of days, You have become our salvation. We hear the sounds of joy and victory rising from the tents of the righteous, for Your right hand has done mighty things. Your right hand is lifted high. Your right hand has done mighty things!

Father, we confess that there were moments when it seemed as though death had won, when the darkness of Friday overwhelmed our hope. Yet You, O God, would not abandon Your Son to the grave. You did not give Him over to death. Instead, You raised Him so that He might live and declare Your works to every generation.

We stand in awe this morning before the gate of the Lord, that open tomb through which our risen Savior walked in triumph. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone of our faith, of our hope, and of our eternal future. This is Your doing, O Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes.

This is the day that You have made — not just any day, but the day that changed every day that would follow. We rejoice and are glad in it! We do not take this morning for granted. We do not treat this celebration as routine. We come with grateful hearts, with voices ready to praise, and with spirits eager to worship the risen Christ.

Save us, we pray, O Lord. Grant us success as we proclaim the good news of the empty tomb to a world still living in the shadow of death. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord — our Savior, our Redeemer, our risen King.

Open our hearts now, Lord, as we open Your Word. Prepare us to receive what You have for us in this hour. May everything we do in this service bring honor and glory to the Lamb who was slain and is alive forevermore.

In this passage, we discover three movements that lead us from the darkness of death to the dawn of new life.

I. The Discovery That Disturbed Her (vv. 1-2)

• Mary came to the tomb “while it was still dark” — darkness both literal and spiritual

• The stone was removed — not to let Jesus out, but to let the witnesses in

• Her first response was not faith but fear: “They have taken the Lord!”

CONCLUSION:

Mary came to the tomb carrying spices for a dead body. She left carrying a message that would change the world. This Easter, God invites you to make the same journey Mary made — from the darkness of doubt to the discovery of an empty tomb, from a tearful search for a dead Jesus to a life-transforming encounter with a living Savior. The tomb is still empty. The Lord is still risen. And He is still calling you by name.

Leader: Jesus stood before the governor, and Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

People: Jesus said, “You say so.”

Leader: They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. They twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head.

People: They mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

Leader: They led Him away to crucify Him. Over His head they put the charge against Him: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”

People: Those who passed by derided Him, shaking their heads and saying, “Save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

Leader: From noon until three o’clock, darkness came over the whole land.

People: About three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Let us pray:

Gracious and merciful God, we gather on this day of paradox—a day when hosannas give way to the shadow of the cross, when triumph walks hand in hand with suffering, when the King enters His city knowing full well what awaits Him.

Like the psalmist, we come before You in our distress, knowing that our eyes grow weak with sorrow, that our souls and bodies carry the weight of grief, that life can feel consumed by anguish. We know what it means to feel forgotten, to face the contempt of others, to hear whispers of conspiracy and threat against us.

Yet on this Palm Sunday, we see in Jesus the One who knew these same afflictions—who would soon be despised and rejected, who would be betrayed by friends, who would face mockery, conspiracy, and death itself.

And so, with the psalmist, we declare our trust in You. We say, “You are our God.” We place our times in Your hands, knowing that even the darkest Friday cannot defeat Your purposes, that even the sealed tomb cannot contain Your love.

Lord, let Your face shine upon us, Your servants, and save us in Your unfailing love. As we walk this week from palms to passion, from celebration to sorrow, from the mountaintop to the valley of the shadow of death, remind us that our Savior has walked this path before us, and that resurrection awaits on the other side of the cross.

In the name of Jesus, who enters Jerusalem as King, we pray. Amen.

Leader: Jesus said to Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”

We thank You that You hear our voices when we call to You. You listen to our cries for mercy. You do not turn away from us in our need, but You draw near to us with compassion and love. This morning we ask that You would hear our prayers as we gather in Your name.

Lord, we confess our sins to You. We have fallen short of Your glory. We have failed to love You with all our hearts and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We have walked in darkness when You have called us to walk in light. Forgive us, O God, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Mary and Martha sent word to Jesus that their brother Lazarus was sick, expecting Him to come immediately. But Jesus delayed. He stayed where He was for two more days. And by the time He arrived, Lazarus had been dead for four days. Why would Jesus delay? What was He waiting for? This passage reveals profound truths about God’s timing, God’s compassion, and God’s power over death itself.

I. The PURPOSE: Understanding Divine Delays (vv. 1-16)

A. The urgent request - “Lord, he whom you love is ill”

B. The unexpected delay - Jesus stayed two days longer

C. Jesus explains: “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory”

D. God’s timing is not our timing - delays are purposeful, not punitive

II. The PAIN: Jesus Enters Our Suffering (vv. 17-37)

A. Martha’s honest grief - “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died”

B. Jesus makes His declaration - “I am the resurrection and the life”

Conclusion:

The raising of Lazarus is more than just a miracle story. It is a preview of Easter morning. It is a demonstration that Jesus has authority over life and death. It is proof that even when Jesus delays, even when things seem hopeless, even when death appears to have the final word, Jesus can speak life into any situation. As we move closer to Holy Week, this passage reminds us that the same Jesus who called Lazarus out of the tomb would Himself walk out of a tomb three days after His crucifixion. He is the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in Him, even though they die, will live. And everyone who lives and believes in Him will never die. The question He asked Martha is the question He asks us today: “Do you believe this?” Our response to that question changes everything.
