Lectionary Readings — Second Sunday of Advent — December 8, 2024

Malachi 3:1-4; Luke 1:3-11; Philippians 1:3-11; Luke 3:1-6

Call to Worship (based on Luke 3:1-6)

Leader: In the wilderness, a voice cries out through the ages:

People: Prepare the way of the Lord!

Leader: Through deep valleys and towering mountains, God's Word comes to us

People: Every crooked path will be made straight!

Leader: In barren places and busy cities, a call echoes:

People: Make ready the highway for our God!

Leader: In this season of preparation, we wait and watch with hope

People: The rough places will be made smooth, and the hills brought low!

Leader: Just as John proclaimed in the desert long ago

People: We raise our voices to welcome God's coming!

Leader: God's salvation is coming to all people, to every nation and tribe

People: And together we will see the glory of the Lord!

Leader: Let us worship God with open hearts and willing spirits

All: We come ready to prepare the way of the Lord, and make straight his paths!

Opening Prayer (based on Malachi 3:1-4)

Let us pray:

Loving God,

As we gather on this second Sunday of Advent, we remember the words from Malachi about your messenger who comes to prepare the way. Sometimes we're nervous about being refined and purified, but we trust that you come to us with love, not judgment. Like a careful craftsperson working with precious metal, you want to bring out the best in us.

Today we especially lift up those in our community who are hurting. Be with those who are sick, giving them strength and comfort. Wrap your arms around those who grieve during this holiday season, when empty chairs at tables bring fresh waves of sadness. For those struggling with depression and anxiety, especially as the days grow shorter, let them feel your light and hope. Give wisdom and gentle hands to all caregivers, doctors, and nurses who tend to the sick and suffering.

Help us to be open to your work in our lives. Clean away the things that get in the way of our relationship with you and each other. We know we're not perfect - there are times when our worship feels hollow or when we're just going through the motions. But you promise to make us new, to help us offer worship that comes from genuine hearts.

As we wait for Christmas, give us the courage to let you work in our lives. Help us see where we need to change and grow. Make us ready to welcome Jesus, not just in the manger, but in our everyday lives. And help us to be your hands and feet to those who are hurting around us.

We pray all this in Jesus' name. Amen.
