Lectionary Readings — Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost — October 27, 2024

Job 42:1-6, 10-17; Psalm 34:1-8 (19-22); Hebrews 7:23-28; Mark 10:46-52

Call to Worship (based on Hebrews 7:23-28)

Leader: We gather to worship our great High Priest, Jesus Christ.

People: Unlike the priests of old, He lives forever to intercede for us.

Leader: The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office.

People: But Jesus holds His priesthood permanently, because He continues forever.

Leader: He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him.

People: For He always lives to make intercession for them.

Leader: For Christ offered Himself once for all when He offered up Himself.

People: The law appoints men in their weakness as high priests.

Leader: But the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints the Son.

All: Who has been made perfect forever. Let us worship our eternal High Priest!

Opening Prayer (based on Psalm 34:1-8)

Gracious and loving God,

We come before You today with hearts full of praise, echoing the words of the psalmist who declared, "I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth."

Lord, we gather as Your people, seeking to magnify Your name together. We ask that You would open our eyes to see Your greatness, our ears to hear Your wisdom, and our hearts to receive Your love.

As we reflect on Your goodness, we remember those who are burdened and broken. May all who are suffering find refuge in You. Let them taste and see that You are good, experiencing the blessedness that comes from trusting in You.

Father, teach us to seek You in all circumstances. When we are afraid, remind us to look to You for deliverance. Surround us with Your presence, that we might know the security of those who take shelter in Your care.

As we begin our time of worship, we invite Your Holy Spirit to move among us. May our souls make their boast in You alone, O Lord. Let the humble hear and be glad, joining us in exalting Your name.

We pray all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.
