Lectionary Readings — Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost — October 6, 2024

Job 1:1, 2:1-10; Psalm 26; Hebrews 1:1-4, 2:5-12; Mark 10:2-16

Call to Worship (based on Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12)

Leader: Long ago, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets;

People: Now God has spoken to us by a Son.

Leader: This Son, the radiance of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being,

People: Sustains all things by his powerful word.

Leader: Jesus, made lower than the angels for a little while,

People: Is now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death.

Leader: The pioneer of our salvation leads many children to glory,

People: Calling us brothers and sisters, unashamed.

Leader: Through Him, we are sanctified and made one family,

People: He is not ashamed to call us brothers and sisters.

Leader: In the midst of the congregation, He sings God's praise,

People: And we join our voices with His, glorifying the Father.

All: Let us worship the One who has dominion over all things, who tasted death for everyone, that we might live for Him!

Opening Prayer (based on Psalm 26)

Gracious and Righteous God,

We come before You today, asking that You examine our hearts and test our minds. Like the psalmist, we seek to walk in integrity, trusting in You without wavering. Lord, we know that Your steadfast love is ever before us, and we strive to walk in Your truth.

Merciful Father, we confess that we have not always kept ourselves from deceitful company or avoided the assembly of evildoers. Forgive us when we have strayed. Wash us thoroughly, that we might approach Your altar with clean hands and pure hearts.

As we gather in Your house, O Lord, we are reminded of the place where Your glory dwells. We love the habitation of Your presence and the place where Your honor abides. Draw near to us as we draw near to You.

God of justice, we pray that You would not sweep us away with sinners, nor our lives with bloodthirsty men. Help us to live lives of integrity, to walk on level ground, and to stand firmly in Your righteousness.

As we begin our worship today, may our voices rise in grateful praise. Like the psalmist, we desire to proclaim thanksgiving aloud and tell of all Your wondrous deeds. Open our eyes to see Your marvels anew, and open our lips that we may declare Your glory.

We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, our Rock and our Redeemer.

Amen.
